Timewatch

November 2002

This project was to design a backdrop, introduction sequence, and advertising for an A&E investigative historical program exploring certain individuals throughout history.

Given a wide variety of historical figures to choose from, Freud to Darwin, Marx to Henry VIII, I chose to design a show about George Orwell.

This decision seemed to force a comparison between Orwell’s literary work to factual events in history, predominately the story 1984.

I began with illustrations of the famous and infamous historical figures throughout political history: Marx, Stalin, etc. I then took these illustrations and created depictions of panels of frosted glass. These panels would form the backdrop for discussions and interviews.

After the backdrop, I used the same language to create print advertisements that would be in newspapers and magazines. The language kept the same rectangular format as the panels and the same font choice of Garamond. The font was chosen to keep a literary feel to correspond with the theme.

Also keeping the same print themes and languages was an educational broadsheet. A poster, that mimics the print advertisements, and a small folder that the poster is folded within and stored.

Lastly was the introduction sequence of the program, unique to this Orwell episode and precisely timed for a slow pacing and easy readability.

Each portion of the project is created to use the same language from episode to episode of the program, but still be unique to each. The illustrations though simple, are the intricate and subtle design that allows for the piece to stand out while not taking attention away from the program for which it was created.
